Returning Holiday Gifts: P.I.A. & Wasteful & Costly to Retail

Over half of consumers says returning unwanted gifts is an annoying part of each holiday season. Oracle reported 77% of Americans will return some gifts and 22% at least half their gifts. CBRE reports up to 30% of the $140 billion of online orders this season are being returned, more than double brick-and-mortar stores. Besides the wasted personal time involved, there is a lot of wasted fuel costs for delivery services and retailers need to decide whether to restock the merchandise, sell it to discounters and resellers, donate it to charities, or destroying it. But for warehouse operators, mass returns have become the biggest growing pain plaguing the booming industrial real estate market.
